In the interests of science I tried out the karmic backports driver.
The good news is that it didn't crash. The bad news is that performance
was abysmal and that it spewed out about a thousand kernel log messages
per second.

The laptop was 1.5 metres from the access point and did a file transfer
at 2.8 megabytes/sec. Using 2.4GHz gives around 10 megabytes/sec. I
suspect the huge amount of logging also didn't help performance.
