I also find this very annoying. Nice to read that it is possible to make 
maximus not start up on boot, but that seems to break my netbook-launcher which 
doesn´t show up anymore. Even if I launch it from the terminal it doesn´t show 
up.
The reason I use netbook-launcher is not because I have a very small screen (12 
inch), but because it is a touchscreen. And it´s very handy to use a menu like 
this and not the default gnome/ubuntu menu.
Luckily a search in google lead me to this bug description, which helped me to 
analyse the problem, but solving it creates another...
