I disagree with you Chris. Do as following to see that it's exist:

* run "Software Sources"
* enable all on the "Ubuntu software" tab
* enable all on the "Updates" tab
* set "Show new distribution release" to "normal release"
* close the "Software Sources with the reloading of package list
* run Synaptic
* press the "Search" button
* type: openoffice.org
* select "Look in" into "name" only and press search
* scroll a bit down

you should see the OpenOffice.org2 packages

       Status: Invalid => New
