On my Mini 9 the symptom is a bit different:

I first enabled the free driver which didn't work (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/502433).

After a reboot, I tried to enable the STA driver, but the machine
crashed while installing. A black screen was shown with the underline
cursor blinking in the upper left corner, and a white hairpin mouse
cursor remained on the screen. The touchpad and the keyboard didn't work
any more, not even Alt-SysRq combinations (tried K, S, U, B).

After power off and bootup the free wifi driver was still in use with
the errors described in 502433.
