I noticed using torrent software like qbittorrent (1.5.6) on Karmic (but not on Jaunty) would kill all network functionality for _other_ software for some minutes, and when up afterwards resolving connections the network would be very sluggish. No such problem with Transmission (better default settings?). This coupled with the ipv6 dns problems...
