I have the similar problem since the middle of December 2009. Ubuntu 9.10 + all
the latest updates. The description:
1) I log in;
2) start gnome-terminal;
3) launch "ping 192.168.0.2";
4) press Ctrl-C to stop pinging and GNOME closes and I see the graphical log-in
screen again;
Another case:
1) I fill some cells in OpenOffice.org sheet document;
2) at a random cell after pressing Enter GNOME closes and I see the graphical
log-in screen again;

In both cases all running programs are closed except those in terminal
background i.g. "screen rtorrent".
I cannot reproduce the problem because it happens suddenly without any
suspicious conditions.
