Hi, I'm affected by this problem too on a Asus M3000

Ubuntu 8.04 was ok, in 9.4 I apparently solved adding - Option "AccelMethod"
"XAA" - in xorg.conf (not tested very much)
Non I tested only linux-
image-2.6.30-freezetest9_git02200d0~gomyhr_i386.deb and it works fine
with graphic effects too. Is this kernel suitable for production
enviroments?
I can make more tests or install kernel, please tell me how I can help
