I have a Live CD for Ubuntu 9.04,
Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (desktop) and
gparted 0.4.5-2ubuntu1 (64-bit)
are installed on my PC.

I am experiencing a similar problem.

1. I used the live CD to start ubuntu
2. Went to device /dev/sdb
3. Verified my existing partitions
--- sdb3 is extended
--- sdb4-9 are logical partitions
4. I have 55 GB unallocated
5. When I tried to add a partition, the Create as: dropdown only permitted
Primary partition, The other two choices were grayed out.

I got the same results when I repeated steps 2-5 using my installed
ubuntu system.
