Great to hear you found a way to solve this issue! I reckon this was an issue with the way the factory formatted your stick. In that case it wouldn't be a bug in Ubuntu -- although it would be worth providing support for it if it occurs often and when Windows Vista is able to support it.
Could you please reformat the USB device in Vista as well and check if it is still usable with Ubuntu?
