Public bug reported:

This is a 6.06 box fully up-to-date. Intel 845G onboard video, two X
servers running, one with the X clients local, the other on a remote box
running 6.10. VMWare was running.

I was switching from the 7th (local X) to the 8th (remote X) vt. Then
the X on vt 7 died and the Kernel message appeared. The X on vt 8
continued to work. gdm opened a new login screen on vt9. I restarted gdm
to be on vt 7 again.
