I have to add that what happened after this (or before maybe) is that
the X on vt 7 crashed. X on vt 8 continued to work normally.

** Attachment added: "dmesg.log"
   http://librarian.launchpad.net/6597173/dmesg.log

** Description changed:

This is a 6.06 box fully up-to-date. Intel 845G onboard video, two X
servers running, one with the X clients local, the other on a remote box
- running 6.10. I was switching from the 7th (local X) to the 8th (remote
- X) vt. VMWare was running.
+ running 6.10. VMWare was running.
+
+ I was switching from the 7th (local X) to the 8th (remote X) vt. Then
+ the X on vt 7 died and the Kernel message appeared. The X on vt 8
+ continued to work. gdm opened a new login screen on vt9. I restarted gdm
+ to be on vt 7 again.
