I have the same problem with my MSI 670 notebook. I can activate the
recording buttons in the Gnome volume settings, but this does not
persist. I don't have any input, neither on "MIC", nor "Front Mic" or
Line (with an external microphone plugged in).

I have googled for "ALC883" and found that this is a common problem on
many machines. I did not find a solution, yet. I even removed pulseaudio
from the system (Ubuntu Jaunty) and use esound now instead, but to no
avail.

snd-hda-intel loads with the option "model=6stack-dig". I have also
tried "targa-2ch-dig" and "targa-dig" with the same result (but fewer
entries in the sound mixer).

It seems that ALSA is just buggy for this chip.
