Karmic has so screwed up my machine that I have trouble even using it. The root cause: grub2. I had a multiboot system running smoothly, now it is a chaotic mess. I am at a point of deciding whether to reformat everything and start again or just use the only partition that works, 9.04. Grub2 sucks. I have all bootable partitions, but apparently the grub designators for the partitions are all rearranged. For instance, my 9.04 is on /dev/sda1, but according to the menu.lst that will launch it properly has some uuid that I can't even read or figure out. All my other choice on the menu usually come back saying there is no partition there, etc, etc. My /dev directory doesn't have a by-uuid subdirectory.
Forcing us into using uuid was a stupid idea. I'm sorry that I couldn't have been more help.
