The log suggested that you didn't have hal running. X in Lucid doesn't
use hal at all but udev instead, and these situations should not happen
anymore, since you can't live without udev.

After upgrade to karmic, Xorg will boot with display blank, and no reaction to
keypresses (e.g. Alt+Ctrl+1 shows no reaction)
