Update: A few hours after I wrote above about the new problem, I tried
to log in again and landed in "Busybox" instead, which offers a plain
text console session. A second start into the recovery version reported
that the file /sys/init were missing. It turns out that my /sys
directory is apparently empty now, and that also explains why I could
not shutdown - the shutdown script usually lives in /sys ... I'll bring
my Ubuntu 8.04.2 CD to work on Monday, start it in live mode and try to
copy all files from /sys on the CD to /sys on the hard drive. I found
this suggestion by searching at ubuntu.com for busybox and its prompt
("(initframs)" or similar). I'll plan on creating a backup directory
under the root "/" where important files like those in /sys could have
copies; the command line in busybox has enough commands to do a restore-
copy easily to recover from this disease. AS time goes by, I may add a
few more essentials there.
Cheers, Jochen
