Sounds like my problem

Symptoms:
After a fresh reboot sometimes Pulseaudio Volume Meter recorder shows mic
working briefly. But soon dies after a few minutes. It worked with skype for
a short period but usually dies when I run a program that tries to access it.
Is there a way to restart pulse/alsa to re-initialize? I could not find an
easy way.

Computer is
HP Pavillion DV4   dv1220us
Running LinuxMint based on Ubuntu Karmic 9.10

$ lspci | grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
01:05.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS780 Azalia controller
$ uname -a
Linux DV4 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux

I upgraded using PPA from here
http://www.webupd8.org/2009/11/ubuntu-karmic-upgrade-alsa-to-1021-from.html
Now running
Pulseaudio 0.9.21
Alsa   1.0.21

Even after upgrading, symptoms are the same.

Same symptoms when I boot off a LinuxMint x64 or x32 CD

When I boot to Vista..errrrr it works.

Looking pretty hopeless now for an easy fix, so I'm about so switch back
to an older notebook computer where mic worked.

Any suggestions?
