I run kubuntu karmic 9.10 on x86 64 and have the same problem sometimes.
i use opengl and trilinar effects for the plasma desktop, use a nvidia
GeForce 9400 GT, NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 185.18.36 Fri Aug 14

It can be reproducible easily when you enable this option and try to
disable and renabled the effects. Sometimes it will crash.
I have a few error in log too but i don't know if are related.
