This was fixed by installing PulseAudio (sudo apt-get install pulseaudio
pavucontrol padevchooser), setting it as the default device for all
categories in System Settings > Multimedia, and then using pavucontrol
to choose a working audio profile. Perhaps this should be done by
default on a new install? My understanding of the KDE audio stack is
limited.
