Actually, the test above in #7 was done with ubuntu gnome, not xubuntu installed.
Also, I just rebuilt the driver with the patch removed (I was able to ssh in and do the rebuild of the driver), and ubuntu boots with the slit screen described in bug #495553, but it does run well otherwise. After re-installing xubuntu and updating it, I can try the patch again, or possibly an updated patch.
