This behaviour is still a problem for me (in Ubuntu 9.10). The timeout Per Ångström refers to has been (reluctantly) changed upstream to 120 seconds (after strenuous efforts from Per Ångström - great work!), but if you happen to have a slow wi-fi (as a result of a long broken rtl8187 driver in Ubuntu, as I have), and have full-cd audio files in a remote share, this will probably bite you. I don't think this is such a rare scenario as not to deserve attention. So, I sugest that when changing metadata, the dialog should be left open while 'applying' changes, and leave to the user the decision to abort if it takes too long.
