Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Can you please try installing "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic" (then reboot) & report your results? A number of audio problems on laptops have been resolved by installing this package. Also please ensure there are no extra "alsa model quirks" in your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf If this does not resolve your issue & you are using Jaunty or Karmic, please run the command apport-collect -p alsa-base 505781 with this package installed.
