Never mind. I found "slock". It powers off the monitor and you have to type your password almost blind to reactivate your screen again. To a casual observer the pc has locked up. There is no useful helpfile for this CLI app. Hope this helps some people who have removed gnome- screensaver just so "xset dpms force off" would work properly.
