Public bug reported:

dper...@argos$ alsamixer
No mixer elems found

With linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-17-generic, sound just worked.
Now it has an unknown symbol error when trying to load the backported
"snd.ko"

TROUBLESHOOTING:

dper...@argos$ lsmod | grep '^(snd|sound)' | awk '{print "rmmod "$1}' |
sudo bash

dper...@argos$ sudo insmod /lib/modules/2.6.31-18-generic/updates/alsa/snd.ko
FATAL: Error inserting snd
(/lib/modules/2.6.31-18-generic/updates/alsa/snd.ko): Unknown symbol in module,
or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error running install command for snd

dper...@argos$ dmesg | grep snd
[15159.601963] snd: Unknown symbol unregister_sound_special
[15159.602343] snd: Unknown symbol register_sound_special_device
[15159.603482] snd: Unknown symbol sound_class

NOTE:

I listed my specific system, but believe the noted bug will stop any of
the backported alsa drivers from loading.
