I have the same problem in MINT Helena 8 (Ubuntu 9.10). In BIOS i switched to ECP, then did command as a root:
primaxscan -l on, then I got message: This Port does not support the EPP-Mode Please activate EPP-Mode or ECP-Mode with included EPP-mode! The activated and detected Modis are: SPP-Port present PS2-Port present ECP-Port present. There are no problems in Win Xp. I have no more patience to fight on.
