Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: unattended-upgrades
This concerns unattended-upgrades 0.52ubuntu1 in Karmic.
If u-u is in the midst of upgrading the system, and the user shuts down
or reboots, the unattended-upgrade-shutdown script pauses the process
until the upgrade finishes. In the default Ubuntu (Gnome) desktop, this
occurs at the black screen with the white Ubuntu logo in the middle,
that appears shortly before the final poweroff/reboot.
If an upgrade is in progress, this logo-screen will appear for
(potentially) a lot longer than it normally does, and with no indication
as to why. The user may become impatient or confused, believing that the
shutdown/reboot process has hung ("it never takes this long!") and may
decide to "help" things along by reaching for the power button.
This is a wishlist item, that if u-u is delaying the shutdown/reboot
process in order to install updates, that it explicitly inform the user
of what is going on.
** Affects: unattended-upgrades (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
