Okay...I found a solution, but not a fix:  if I leave the monitor off
during boot and turn it on later, then I get the correct monitor
information and can use the higher resolutions.  Somewhere there is a
conflict with the graphics controller and the EDID of the
monitor...whether it's a software or hardware bug is beyond me, although
I recently installed XP on that system (for someone else who doesn't
stand a chance with Ubuntu), and don't have any problems...so I must
assume that it is an Ubuntu software driver bug.
