tom_wy, the issue with virtual box doesn't indicate that it is not a
linux software issue, since it is still a linux kernel that is accessing
the hardware.  The fact that you haven't had any issues until recently
could be an indicator that some software is using too much resources
when it hasn't before, it could also be an indicator of aging hardware.

Laptops are notoriously hard to take apart for cleaning and inspection,
although I am not familiar with that brand.  One possible way of
determining the health of the fans is to, if possible, take out the hard
drive and CD drive and boot up to a LiveCD on a USB stick.  This way,
your two major sources of sound (hard drive and optical drive) are
eliminated and you can listen for the fans.
