Upgrading to 9.10 (on AMD64 machine) I hit a few problems and the
upgrade allegedly failed. Fortunately it rebooted OK and then this
morning it suggested software upgrades (to OpenSSL).
The upgrade manager system crashed and looking at the problem I see that
it was trying to upgrade "Iced Tea Plugin" and openjdk-re and the
problem was in /usr/sbin/update-alternatives
There was a Perl diagnostic relating to line 1017 in that file "Trying
to call slave method on undefined value" in the postrm script.
I tried removing it with the force option but it still didn't work
I worked around the problem by moving /usr/sbin/update-alternatives
aside and just making it say "exit 0;" running the remove on icedtea-
plugin and then replacing /usr/sbin/update-alternatives and moving it
back.
All updates have now seemingly been installed OK and the system is
working satisfactorily.
Possibly the "alternatives" directory is a bit mangled as I had a string
of problems a while back with half-working Java runtimes.
