Same problem with Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty 64-bit desktop running on a Toshiba Satellite P505-S8950 with one catch. My laptop did power off on it's own until I removed Network Manager and installed WICD. Since then my laptop will not power off on shutdown.
I had to install WICD because when using Network Manager my wireless connection would drop randomly and after the second reconnect would actually disable my wireless altogether.
