As an afterthought - I suppose it's possible that fglrx could be covering up if the initial problem involved the regular drm and open- source driver... but having survived the suspends and resumes, I'm not in the mood to kill my X session right now. Looks like a couple others clicked as being affected, so if either of you have avoided fglrx, maybe you can confirm on that point?
