I managed to have access to a machine where the bug does not show up. That machine has a /etc/network/interfaces file containing exactly the "auto lo \\ iface lo inet loopback" lines.
So this seems to be a relevant clue to bug hunting. In which way this file interferes with localhost being brought up?
