Public bug reported:
Problems experienced in installing from Feisty alternate i386 CD (both
Herds 2 and 5 tried).
It's a truly random crash/reboot situation... sometime it will go a long
way though the installation before crashing, other times it will crash
as soon as the installation environment's kernel has been loaded, before
the frame buffer has been enabled. Very infrequently one gets a kernel
panic.
Everything in the system except CD-ROM drive, CPU, and RAM has been
swapped out. RAM has been tested via memtest86.
So that narrows it down to either a motherboard hardware problem, or a
software problem. The motherboard is an Abit KU8 (ULI M1689 chipset)
with AMD 2GHz socket 754 processor.
However it is now happily running Ubuntu 6.06, installed from the AMD64
alternate CD. It seems that some of the hardware is not supported by
6.06, so perhaps this is where there is either a hardware problem, or
the hardware support in the Fiesty installer kernel is defective.
