Issue seems to be solved. I added karmic-proposed to software sources
and updated the system. Don't know which of the updated packets solved
it ... maybe the kernel update to 2.6.31-18-generic.
I can now choose the USB sound card in alsamixer and with
System->Preferences->Sound and the speaker set (Teufel Concept B200 USB)
is working flawlessly.
