Public bug reported:

This has been a problem with Linux installers since as far as I can remember.
And it's really time to fix this and other long-standing problems, or we'll
never fix Bug #1. Ubuntu is already fixing some of the problems, like root
accounts and

Linux kernel can use swap files or swap partitions. Swap partitions are
allegedly slightly faster (I haven't seen any real data), so the high
performance server guys tend to prefer them, and they made them default
on Linux. As most other operating systems seem to be doing fine with
swap files, the gain is probably very small.

However, this has been the single most confusing issue in Linux
installers ever - countless number of users failed the installation and
threw Linux CDs away just because they couldn't understand what the heck
are those partitions about.

So I propose that the installer for desktop gets changed to default to a
single Linux partition (no separate /home and whatever) with a swap file
on the main partition in Edgy. The user can still select advanced
partitioning to get marginally better performance. But the common case
gets really simple now. I think after we demonstrate that this is indeed
possible, other distributions will quickly follow. :-)
