I had the same problem that Bushman02 reported, but in Karmic. I couldn't install libstdc++5 because it wasn't available in Karmic, but I did already have libstdc++6 installed.
The problem went away when I tried to uninstall Lightning using the Thunderbird add-ons dialog. The attempt to uninstall actually failed, because when I restarted Thunderbird, Lightning was still there but now it worked, with my calendar all nicely displayed.
