I think I found a workaround: Disable the Internet-based clock setting
(under Time and Date, set the Configuration to "Manual").  I have no
idea why this helps, but since I changed the setting a couple of weeks
ago this problem has never recurred.  The clue was a bunch of "NTP"
messages that got printed to the console when the problem occurred.
