First, load the needed software (using a dsl connection):

sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp

go to linuxant.com and get a dialup modem driver:

click on drivers tab to get conexant chipsets, on next page, click left
column DGC (modem) driver first installation and download, instructions.
Pay close attention.

Now you have a graphic modem program and a driver.

Next, remove  the "modemamanager"

sudo apt-get remove modemmanager


Finally, when you want to use your modem, get a terminal window and
enter:

sudo apt-get gnome-ppp.  Then enter your dialup, phone number, id and
password and click "connect."
