First, load the needed software (using a dsl connection): sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp
go to linuxant.com and get a dialup modem driver: click on drivers tab to get conexant chipsets, on next page, click left column DGC (modem) driver first installation and download, instructions. Pay close attention. Now you have a graphic modem program and a driver. Next, remove the "modemamanager" sudo apt-get remove modemmanager Finally, when you want to use your modem, get a terminal window and enter: sudo apt-get gnome-ppp. Then enter your dialup, phone number, id and password and click "connect." I hope this helps.
