Public bug reported:

I tried playing a variety of audio and video formats, mp3, mp4, avi, etc.
Although video displayed normally no sound at all played.
I ran a system test with the multi-media systems selector on the sound and
video and again, video was normal but this time I did get sound as long as
default output was set to ALSA ALC861-VD Analog (pipeline: alsasink
device="hw:0,0" is not highlighted). No other settings under this test would
produce any sound whatsoever.
Also, I have noticed that the initial login sound that plays as the system
starts up sometimes plays and sometimes doesn't.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest updates
Linux version 2.6.31-17-generic
The following is from my user log file, not sure if it's relevant or not but
looked like it might help:

Jan 16 14:02:48 phillip-laptop pulseaudio[2088]: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up

Jan 16 14:02:48 phillip-laptop pulseaudio[2088]: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this
is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Please report this issue to the
ALSA developers.
