It is really a usability issue. Your "printer" simply sends PostScript
to your default printer. CUPS and HPLIP take care that the job gets
printed correctly.

For printers explicitly supported by Gutenprint you can let GIMP
directly create the format which the printer needs. For this you need to
add a new printer entry in the GIMP printing dialog and then use the
setup button to choose the model. For your printer this is not needed.
