** Description changed:

When I start my computer, the system boots fine but winds up sitting at
the default text login prompt. Eventually, two messages appear ("* nmbd
is running" and "* Starting init crypto disks... [OK]" ) and then KDM
  finally appears.

- Why does it wait so long for the "* Starting init crypto disks... [OK]".
+ Why does it wait so long for the "* Starting init crypto disks... [OK]"?
Immediately after that message, KDM starts. Beforehand, the system
seems to just be waiting for me to login, with no activity shown. I
cannot determine if there is any issues with fglrx, my Intel 5300 wifi,
  or crypt disks.

  Release: 9.10
Kernel: 2.6.31-17-generic-pae (also occurs under 2.6.31-17-generic)
