Some additional info I should probably have related earlier I did try a clean install of Ubuntu about a week ago, but it fails completely. After that I was not able to start Ubuntu at all. Of course it was a mistake of my behalf not to try the Live-CD, as I later found out that my computer did was not able to run that either. Anyway, I installed xubuntu and the then the Gnome environment on to of that. This I can start with some strange workarounds.
With Xubuntu as underlaying OS I get the login window and I am able to select from the following list of sessions: GNOME, Failsafe GNOME, XFC Session, and Xterminal. The behavioral of the computer is vastly different according to my selection. If I select Gnome or Failsafe Gnome the screen goes black after few seconds and the computer dies (exactly as before). If I select XFC session the computer starts up I get the Xubuntu desktop but then it opens a terminal and dies. I can login using the Xterminal. The strange workaround I mentioned is as follows. I simply login using the Xterminal, do absolutely nothing, just type exit and hit enter to close the terminal. Now I can log in using either Gnome or XFC and everything seems normal except that the sound is always muted when the sessions starts. -- gdm does not start https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/482841 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
