after several more similar panics with similar symptoms, I just had one
which I seemed to catch before the system totally froze. I was trying
to open empathy from the menu which failed, so then I went to open up a
terminal to launch it from which also failed. I then ascertained that
something was locking up the system so I turned off my wireless and
started closing programs: skype, firefox, evolutions, etc. Finally I
decided to reboot but was unable to through gnome, and still couldn't
open a terminal. I tried ctrl-alt-F1 to get another session to reboot
from but that just led to a black screen. I finally started the SysRq
combination to reboot, but realized halfway through that I didn't really
remember it... so finally I just hard powered off the laptop. When I
rebooted, I found multiple bugs over the last hour in the log files,
many similar to the bugs I had been experiencing before the kernel
panics.

some new (possibly significant lines that I had never seen before were:

-A Rhythmbox segfault right before a kernel paging request bug:

"Jan 18 13:34:20 austin-laptop kernel: [ 4695.872996] rhythmbox[2643]: segfault
at 10 ip 00007f4051cd948c sp 00007fffbdf79210 error 6 in
libc-2.10.1.so[7f4051c61000+166000]
Jan 18 13:34:20 austin-laptop wpa_supplicant[1173]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Jan 18 13:34:39 austin-laptop kernel: [ 4715.051925] BUG: unable to handle
kernel paging request at 000000000032e4af"

-Right before I finally gave up and forced a reboot there is this line:

"Jan 18 16:18:01 austin-laptop kernel: [14517.632516] Fixing recursive
fault but reboot is needed!"

Here is a list of the processes that became tainted, the order in which
