So this is likely a bug in the upstream build stuff; in this case, I find it likely that it's due to the use of AM_PATH_GTK2 (told you! ;-).
There is a way to workaround a broken upstream build system like that one, but it would be best to fix the build system to not cause the extra libs to start with (root cause).
