Karmic occasionally hangs on my machine and I resort to power cycling. I
have now observed three instances of files being corrupted by completely
unrelated data during such cycling. For example, in the most recent
event I power cycled when the machine hung while editing a .doc file in
OpenOffice. Upon reboot, the .doc file had contents from at least two
distinct files owned by other processes. For the reasons below, I
believe that I may be witnessing memory or ext3 corruption. No errors
are reported by memtest.
Details of most recent event:
• Machine hung while editing doc. Power cycled.
• The openoffice file consisted of apparent Chrome-related internal structures
(tab titles, etc) between 0x0000 and 0xcfff, an excerpt of .recently-used file
between 0xd000 and 0xffff, and unrecognizable text beyond 0x10000. (i.e.,
memory is not "random", but is instead an chimera of entire blocks of
recognizable memory)
• The corrupted file had NO recognizable content from the original (but
compression would make that difficult).
• The original clean file and corrupted files had approximately the same
length, ~150KB.
• .recently-used is also malformed.
I have seen 2 other instances of corruption, also with openoffice files.
Since I use that frequently, I believe that observations are biased
toward this frequently used app. Furthermore, it presumably would not
have access to Chrome memory.
The filesystem is ext3, not ext4. (I use the default ext4 for /, but the
corruption occurred on existing ext3 fs from 9.04.)
I am aware of bugs 453579 and 488113. The latter seemed relevant, but
was closed for presumed faulty memory.
Since I'm unsure what's in the corrupted file, I won't post it here.
