I have the same problem, but it only seems to affect the profile I was using before I closed firefox. I can open other profiles from the profile manager (which I have set to pop up when I open firefox). It doesn't seem to happen if I use CTRL+Q rather than CTRL+W to quit.
For other people having this problem, it can be fixed by running "killall firefox" in the terminal.
