I would like to offer some follow up on this. The main reason for this bug was a condition (default after system installation), that the proprietary nVidia drivers were _not_ enabled in System -> Administration, even though the nvidia kernel was installed. After enabling the proprietary nVidia driver, the main problem was solved.
Sometime between the original report and now the hibernation and STR both started to act properly, so this is OK too. There is still some problem in wakeup from STR. Sometimes, especially after many STRs, opening of the laptop screen will either: - not wake from STR at all, or - will wake from STR, but system will go to sleep on its own almost immediately afterwards. In this case second close/open of the screen will usually wake the system properly up.
