It appears that the Mozilla team has fixed the bug. I kind of miss the days when the developers would actually report back to the tracking system when they fixed a bug users had taken time to report (rather than relying on an annual sweep of issues which have had no activity because the users gave up), but I'm still grateful that they at least fixed the bug. Of course, I can't be certain that the bug is fixed, because I'm no longer running this workstation on the same hardware I was using when I ran into the symptoms, but presumably the developers were able to reproduce and eliminate the problems themselves, based on the information I provided initially.
