These applications are able to alter the state of the entire system.
Allowing them to be run without authentication would allow other users
(or even bugs in software allowing remote attackers to run software as
you) to reconfigure your computer without your knowledge. This might
include removing firewall rules or altering your virus database so that
it won't pick up all viruses.
They're not trying to protect you from you. They're trying to protect
you from other people.
