Public bug reported:

Connect digital camera via usb. Device automounts. Selected program
(in media tab) launches and fails to obtain a lock on the device. This
has been reproduced using Camera, DigiKam, flPhoto, F-Spot, and gThumb.

In order to import images from the camera you must close the media
program, unmount the camera, relaunch the media program and manually
import the images.

When 2 users are logged into the system at the same time the issue is
even worse:

The device automounts on the other user's account. In order to unmount
the device you must switch users, then switch back.

Posts on the forums suggest this is an issue in Intrepid, Jaunty, and
now Karmic. It has not worked properly since Hardy.
