Here is a summary of the situation on my PC 8 months ago: Ubuntu 8.10 & Firefox as of 8 months ago:
Firefox + BelkinGrouter + VirginBroadbandModem => problem Firefox + VirginBroadbandModem => NO problem UbuntuUpdate + BelkinGrouter + VirginBroadbandModem => NO problem UbuntuSynaptic + BelkinGrouter + VirginBroadbandModem => NO problem I don't recall ever having seen Ubuntu update/synaptic stop like this. Accidentally damaged the router and waiting for a replacement.
